House Cleaning

How to treat steel beams

Steel beams are an aesthetically very suggestive element, which also gives extreme strength to our house’s structure. Although it is a very resistant material, it still needs careful maintenance. It must be cleaned properly and protected from rust.

To undermine the reliability of the steel beams, the entire structure does not have to be damaged. It is enough that it appears rusty in a few places. This jeopardizes the entire sealing of the beams. But to protect them from rust and mold, very little is needed. Here’s how to treat steel beams to increase their life and preserve their beauty.

Needed: Iron brush, abrasive sponge, soft sponge, neutral soap, anti-rust paint, anti-mold.

First of all, it is necessary to check that the steel beams are completely intact. If you attack with rust, the first thing is to remove it. If only a thin layer of rust needs to be removed, scrape the surface with an iron brush. We continue until we have removed all the visible rust. If the damage appears more substantial, sandblasting can be carried out.

After this operation, it is necessary to pass to the painting phase. The first layer, the primer, is a transparent anti-rust paint. Let it dry for at least 24 hours before moving on to the next step. Let’s remember to choose a specific paint for steel with the right components. Finally, you can switch to painting to give the steel beams a brighter color.

If, on the other hand, the steel beams are attacked by mold, the procedure to be followed is slightly different. First of all, it is necessary to remove the mold, using neutral soap diluted in water. We then take a slightly abrasive sponge and pass it on the surface covered with mold.

Be careful not to spread the mold in the surrounding areas with the movement of the sponge. Once all the beams have been cleaned, rinse them carefully and dry them well. Then, having passed and dried the anti-rust, we apply a product against mold. It is necessary to pass the anti-mold on our beams at least once a year.

As for ordinary maintenance, very little work is needed. Once we have treated the beams with anti-rust and anti-mold, do periodic cleaning. Let’s start with a good dusting with a simple electrostatic cloth. We try to avoid that the dust accumulates too much.

This will make it much easier to remove. Finally, even a few times a year, let’s wash them with neutral soap dissolved in water. We use a soft sponge and then rinse carefully. Finally, we dry roughly.

Note: During the painting, phase always use gloves and a mask.
