How to remove the musty smell from wool

Mold is a spore, a kind of fungus that forms in the house when there is a strong condensation presence. Very often, also facilitated by humidity, it also manages to infiltrate the wardrobes, causing that bad smell that you feel when you try to take a garment that has not been worn for a long time.

In the wardrobes, it often happens that not cleaning or airing them ordinarily, that bad smell of closed and mold forms, affecting the clothes. At that point, it is necessary to arm yourself and carry out careful washing: since it is mold, simple washing will not be enough, but you need to find the right products that can be useful to remove the smell of mold, and in this guide, we will see how to do it for wool.

The bleach

Having taken the clothes that can have this bad smell and the probable presence of mold on them, you have to go to the right methods to eliminate them. The first, certainly the most used, is that of bleach: strong, acidic detergent, which not only fights stains but also allows garments to be sanitized shockingly.

Just pour some immediately after putting the normal detergent in the washing machine and let the normal washing cycle run.

The bicarbonate

To use more homemade methods, you can go to grandma’s remedies: one of these is certainly the use of baking soda. This element can cleanse with a certain force the possible presence of stains and mold on the garments, obtaining a well-cleaned and perfumed result.

As this is a dusty element, you can add a little softener inside the drum during the wash. This prevents the bicarbonate from being trapped in the fabrics to avoid that dusty and hard effect.

The vinegar

Another solution concerns a little appreciated method since it is thought to leave a bad smell. The use of vinegar allows you to eliminate the presence of dirt and odors without any streaks. In this case, a little vinegar must be added together with the washing detergent, or during the complete washing, while maintaining a high temperature.

The action of vinegar will thus be particularly effective, not only against the smell of mold but also for other types of stains and odors. Usually, if the smell of vinegar remains, leave the laundry in the open air or repeat another wash if necessary.
