How to remove mildew from awnings

After a few cold and rainy days, some nice sun returns. We decided to put out our awnings again to avoid too much light in the house. It’s a pity that we received a big bad surprise: there are some ugly mold stains in our tent. This is not just an aesthetic problem because mold spoils the fabric of the curtains in depth.

It is necessary to run for cover and wash the curtains as soon as possible. But how to do it without ruining the curtains and without working too hard? First, let’s analyze the fabric, to understand which is the best solution. Then let’s see how to remove the molding step by step.

Needed: Neutral soap, bleach, soft bristle brush.

Use neutral soap

One of the most popular materials for awnings is acrylic. To remove mold from this kind of curtains, you need neutral soap. We prepare a solution of soap and water, pouring about a cap in 3 liters. So we thoroughly wet the sponge and dab the part where the mold is located. We take care not to spread the mold into the surrounding tissue.

Finally, rinse thoroughly. It is useful to remove resin residues, which favor the formation of mold. We put a cup of bleach in a liter of water and gently rub the area. This way, the resin should detach from the tent. Then we rinse immediately afterward to avoid staining the curtain.

Rub

If our awning is in polyester, we have to do it differently. To remove mold, the only solution is a lot of patience and elbow grease. Unfortunately, the mold penetrates deeply into the fabrics, and it is necessary to rub with force. We put neutral soap in a bucket of water and use a brush with soft bristles.

We rub hard until the stain comes away. This process may not bring any results. In this case, we buy an anti-mold product for the fabrics and repeat the operation. Finally, we rinse carefully and leave to dry.

Periodic maintenance

In any case, the best way to protect the awnings from mold is periodic maintenance. We try to wash them regularly with water and liquid soap. In this way, we will keep the fabric healthy and free from mold. Another important precaution to avoid the formation of mold is always to dry the curtain.

We avoid picking it up when it is still wet, even if it falls in the evening. Also, as soon as the sun comes out, spread it out to let it get air. It will dry out from the winter humidity and last longer.
