How to get rid of onion smell from the refrigerator

In the kitchen, various smells continuously alternate; we go from charming ones, such as the good smell of a freshly baked cake, to decidedly unpleasant ones. Among the latter, we cannot fail to think about the onion’s pungent smell, especially when it is kept in the refrigerator, and within a few hours, it will become a nightmare to open its door.

In this guide, I want to suggest some simple tips on eliminating the smell of onion from the refrigerator and some small tricks to avoid that its smell attacks the environment of the refrigerator going to contaminate the other foods stored inside.

Wash the refrigerator with natural products

There are many specific products on the market, including ecological ones, cleaning the refrigerator, and eliminating its bad smells. Still, since only food is stored inside, to wash it, it is highly recommended to prefer natural products which, in addition to being useful for eliminating the bad smell released from the onion, are also excellent sanitizers.

Just have vinegar or baking soda handy, and you’re done. In case you want to use vinegar, you need to prepare a solution with half water and half vinegar—for example, 250 ml of water and 250 ml of vinegar, preferably white. Same for bicarbonate, the solution must be made-up half of water and half of bicarbonate.

For example, 250 g of water and 250 g of bicarbonate once this solution is prepared in a bowl, at your convenience, if with vinegar or baking soda, you dip a sponge inside it and rub the walls and shelves of the refrigerator.

Absorb odors from the refrigerator

If you do not have enough time to wash the refrigerator, or if you want to prevent the smell of onion from spreading throughout the refrigerator, simple absorbing smells will be enough to make the bad smell of the onion disappear … And not only that.

An excellent odor absorber can be a cotton ball soaked in vinegar and left inside the refrigerator for at least one night; in addition to lemon or potato, cut in half and put in the refrigerator. If, on the other hand, we want our refrigerator to have a pleasant fragrance, we can put beans or coffee grounds inside it in a bowl.

If the smell of coffee is too strong, we can opt for a softer solution. Fill half a glass of water and add a natural extract to your liking; for example, vanilla, almond, orange … We have the choice, according to our tastes.

Prevention is better than cure.

To prevent the smell of onion from attacking our refrigerator, cover it with plastic wrap, and store it in an airtight container. Many are found just in the shape of an onion.

This should then be placed in the special drawer for storing fruit and vegetables. From there, it is almost impossible for its bad smell to escape. In short, it does not take much not to smell the onion.
