How to clean fabric wallpaper

Wallpaper is not only an excellent alternative to painting but also represents a way to decorate the walls and to give the rooms of your home an orderly and refined look. Just like with painted walls, even those covered with wallpaper are subject to the accumulation of dust, and the formation of stains, in the long run, can lead to yellowing of the paper and its detachment from the wall.

These are the reasons why it is important to clean the wallpaper regularly. In the following steps, we will explain how to clean the fabric wallpaper to eliminate any stain and safeguard its integrity.

Needed: Sponge, Water, Neutral Soap, Bleach, Magic Eraser, Toothbrush, Steam Cleaner.

First of all, it is good to specify that, even if the wall should be filthy, it is not advisable to use aggressive products that are not suitable for wallpaper, as it could damage the paper itself, causing it to come off. Rather, using a sponge soaked in lukewarm water, possibly with the addition of neutral soap, is sufficient for effective and non-aggressive cleaning.

It is important to remember that the sponge must be well squeezed and that the water must not be too hot because the paper could be unstuck. It will be necessary to clean from top to bottom, using a ladder or a stick to apply the sponge, insisting on the dirtiest spots.

If there are limited spots, it will be necessary to act directly on them, rubbing longer, but always very gently, using a sponge or brush. In this case, in addition to water and soap, you can use a few drops of delicate and well-diluted bleach, paying close attention to the wallpaper fabric’s color and texture.

Only if the stains continue to be present you can opt for the use of a degreaser, as long as it is delicate and suitable for fabric wallpaper treatment. Also, there is a special product on the market for cleaning wallpaper. It is a magic rubber: moisten it and rub the stain until it has completely disappeared.

A tool that proves to be really effective for cleaning the house, especially for fabric wallpaper, is definitely the steam cleaner. This appliance not only can remove every stain exceptionally, but it performs a truly remarkable sanitizing action. It will be sufficient to perform steam cleaning every six months to have always fresh and perfectly clean walls.

Note: To avoid detaching the paper, do not use too hot water and a sponge that is too soaked. Do not use aggressive products that are not suitable for wallpaper.
