How to clean Curtain Tassels

Curtains with tassels and cords are important pieces of furniture that beautify and embellishes our home. However, we should take care of them constantly and methodically for them to last for a long time. The tassels are the frivolous and old-fashioned touch that we appreciate so much, but we do not pay due attention.

Mites and dust lurk there as in any other fabric; smoke and odors impregnate them, and they are certainly not free from stains and dirt. So here are some little tips on how to clean curtain tassels.

Needed: Paper bag, talcum powder, spray bottle, sparkling water, carpet shampoo or very delicate detergent, very gentle brush, transparent plastic bag, microfibre cloth, towel, hairdryer.

The tassel often assembled on a bracelet or cord, which serves to collect the curtain, is composed of a shaped head (usually made of wood) covered with threads, under which a set of bows are fixed. Again, there are countless versions, from the most sumptuous to the simplest.

They all have one feature in common: they are very delicate, and careless cleaning could seriously compromise their beauty. Among the risks that are run, we can list the following: the wires could open and reveal the head; if assembled with adhesive material, they could come unstuck; the bows could flake or come off; the cotton or wool flock and the velvet, if subject to rubbing, could lose their luster.

We should only resort to aggressive products in extreme cases. The safest method to clean and not damage the tassels is to resort to dry cleaning thanks to talcum powder. In a paper bag of bread, pour 2 tablespoons of talcum powder, insert one tassel at a time, close the bag with your fist and shake it.

The tassel should be uniformly impregnated with talc and, thanks to the energetic movement of your hand, release the particles of impurities in the bag. Next, take it out, shake it and, remove any talcum powder residue. Then, subject it to drying with a hairdryer.

If your tassels are very dirty and stained, fill a spray bottle with sparkling water at room temperature and add 1 tablespoon of mild detergent. Spread a transparent plastic bag on the table and place the tassel to be cleaned on top. First, you have to remove the surface dirt: hair, crumbs, dust.

With great delicacy and always in one direction only (so as not to ruffle it), pass it with a brush with very soft bristles. Then spray a drop of cleaning solution in the corner of the tassel head. Finally, dry the plastic bag well to remove any residual cleaning solution and dirt.

Note: Never use bleach or chemicals. Never rub, rather dab gently to avoid tangling, knotting, or ruining the threads.
