House Cleaning

How to clean window railings

Security is a deeply felt problem nowadays. For this reason, the safety devices for our homes are now indispensable. One of the easiest to install in the window bars. These are extensible gates, which we can easily open and close. We will not feel in prison because it will be enough to open the railings to enjoy the whole window opening. But we will be safe because, if necessary, close them.

Like all the house elements, these railings must also be cleaned because dust and dirt accumulate quickly. All the more if we consider that they are outdoors, completely at the mercy of rain and wind. They are generally made of galvanized steel, a very resistant material that needs to be cleaned in a precise way. So let’s see how always to have clean railings.

Needed: Neutral or mild soap, Non-abrasive sponge, Milk, Talcum powder, Distilled vinegar, Enamel or wax for galvanized steel.

First, we have to rough the dust and any residual sand and rocks brought by the wind. We first pass a cloth to be dusted, preferably antistatic ones, to properly remove the dust. Then we spray water with a spray bottle and pass a cloth. In this way, we will remove the bulk of the dust and dirt to prepare for a more thorough cleaning.

We prepare a solution to clean our railings. Galvanized steel should be cleaned simply with soap and water, without using aggressive detergents to ruin the material.

In a bucket of water, mix half a glass of soap. To protect the zinc coating, we use mild soap and heat the water a little. We mix our solution until some foam is formed. At this point, it will be ready, and we can proceed with cleaning.

For periodic cleaning, just wet a non-abrasive sponge in the solution and pass it on the railings’ surface. We do not squeeze the sponge too much to wet the railings to be cleaned.

With another very wet sponge or spray bottle with only water, rinse the entire surface thoroughly. Finally, we dry with a clean cloth. We will probably need more than one, considering the extension of the grate.

To do a more thorough cleaning, we can do a scrub. We pour the mild soap and water solution on the railings’ surface using a sponge or spray bottle. We rub with a brush with hard bristles making a circular movement.

We try to put more pressure on the dirtiest areas. If necessary, we can do several passes to clean the surface more thoroughly. Then rinse with plenty of water and dry with clean tea towels.

There may be rust stains on our railings. To remove them, we can apply a mixture of milk and talcum powder. We fill a bucket in half with water, pour two glasses of milk and one talcum powder. We mix well with a wooden stick or directly with a ladle.

As an alternative to this solution, we can dilute a glass of distilled vinegar in half a bucket of water. We dip a toothbrush into the solution and rub the rusty areas hard. Rinse with plenty of water and dry carefully.

If we want to protect our galvanized steel railings, we can apply specific enamel or wax. The treatment will also be aesthetically pleasing because it will make the surface shiny. We apply the product with a brush or a soft cloth, proceeding for small areas and covering the entire surface. Let it dry and proceed with a second pass. When it is dry, we polish the railings simply by passing a dry cloth.

Note: To avoid the formation of rust, we periodically clean the railings of our windows.
