How to Wash Foam Rubber

The foam is produced with a foaming agent that creates an air-filled matrix structure. It is generally made of polyurethane or natural latex (the foam rubber latex used in mattresses is well known for its resistance); moreover, it has several qualities.

It is an excellent float, creates thermal and acoustic insulation, has a good braking impact, and is very low in costs. In the following steps, you will find the right instructions on how to wash the foam rubber.

Spread the foam in the sun

Spread the foam out in the sun to dry, or choose a bright, warm place and let it dry completely before using it. Alternatively, place it on a grid, as it promotes maximum air circulation; put the foam in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, as heat and sunlight are enemies.

Perform a humidity test by placing a paper towel under the foam and pressing hard on the top; if the paper towel gets wet, it means that the foam is not dry yet.

Soak the foam in water and vinegar

First, fill a bathtub with enough hot water. Add a mild detergent for washing clothes and follow the directions on the label to determine the correct amount; shake the water to distribute the soap evenly.

Place the foam rubber in the water by pressing it down to cover it completely. Press continuously. If the water gets dirty, empty the tub and fill it with clean water, adding a mild detergent and ΒΌ cup of white vinegar to remove any stains.

Wring out the foam

Empty the soapy water and fill the tub with clean water. If you have a showerhead (found on pull-out showers), use it to spray clean water through the foam; if not, rinse it repeatedly. Once the water is clean and soap-free, empty the tub. Before removing the foam, press it firmly from top to bottom to remove as much water as possible.

Eliminate bad smells with baking soda

If the foam smells bad, sprinkle it with baking soda and lay it out in the sun for several hours. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda. The foam can also be cleaned using a steam cleaner and upholstery cleaner (or mild detergent). Also, remember that it is not recommended to use both the washing machine and the dryer.
